Make your own bath bombs
Equipment:
- A large mixing bowl
- Sieve
- Whisk
- Stirrer
- 12 to 18 silicone moulds
- Screw top glass jar
You will need (ingredients):
- 225g bicarbonate of soda
- 112g Epsom salts
- 112g cornflour
- 112g citric acid powder
- 2.5tbsp. coconut or almond oil
- 2 tsp. essential oil, for fragrance (we used rose and lavender)
- 4 to 6 drops food colouring (we used pink for rose and purple for lavender)
- 1 tbsp. water
- Dried lavender or flower petals, crushed
Note: These quantities make approximately 12 bath bombs, depending on the size of your chosen moulds.
To make
1. Sieve the cornflour, citric acid and bicarbonate of soda into a bowl. Add the Epsom salts and whisk together to combine all the ingredients really well.
2. Pour the wet ingredients (coconut/ almond oil, essential oil, food colouring and water) to the screw top jar and shake well to mix.
3. Very slowly add the liquid to the dry mixture, 1 teaspoonful at a time, and whisk as you go. Slow down the whisking if things start to go fizzy. You should end up with a mixture that barely clumps together, rather like wet sand.
4. Place the dried petals or lavender in the bottom half of your moulds.
5. Spoon mixture into each side of the moulds as quickly as possible so that it does not dry out and press firmly down, leaving a small mount on top of each. Push the 2 halves together and press hard for 15 seconds.
Tip: Try to work quickly but if the mixture becomes too dry just add a couple of sprays of water and mix again.
6. Leave to dry for a couple of hours then remove from the moulds. Pop them onto some tissue or kitchen paper and leave in a dry place until completely set – about 24 hours.
7. Now you can throw 1 in your bath and enjoy the fruits of your labour. Alternatively, wrap in cellophane or tissue, and give it as a gift to family and friends. Provided they are not exposed to moisture, they should last up to 6 months.
Tip: If you’d like to make half the quantity, or 2 different fragranced bath bombs (rose and lavender, for example) then divide all the ingredients into 2 equal halves.
