Remembrance Day Lantern
Skill Level: Beginner
You will need:
- Tissue paper – red, green and black
- Glass jam jar
- Water-based glue/sealer
- Tealight or candle – size appropriate for the jar
- Sponge brush
- Small scissors
- Pencil
- Isopropyl alcohol cleaning fluid (optional)
To make:
1. Wash the glass jam jar with soapy water and then dry. If you have isopropyl alcohol cleaning fluid you can also wipe over the glass with this to ensure a more thorough clean of the surface, however if you do not, it’s not a problem.
2. Using the image above as a guide, lightly draw the shapes onto the tissue paper (petals – red, middle of poppy – black, leaf – green). Draw as many poppies as you would like to use on your jar, you could do them all the same or a variety of sizes.
3. Carefully cut out all of the shapes you have drawn.
4. Using the sponge brush, apply a small amount of the glue/sealer to the jar on the area where you would like to place one of the poppies. Add the leaf and then the red petals next to it. Add a tiny spot of glue to the middle of the petals to add the black centre. As you apply the pieces to the jar, gently flatten them out with the sponge brush or your fingertips - the paper is very fragile so will tear easily.
5. Repeat step 4 to add on all of the poppies you have cut out.
6. With the sponge brush, add a thin layer of glue/sealant over the outside of the jar (not the bottom), brushing in the same direction. Do not put any of the glue/sealant inside the jar. Leave to dry for approximately 1 hour.
7. Place a tealight or candle inside the jar.
