Polymer Clay Earrings
Skill level: Beginner
You will need:
- Polymer clay (mixture of white, light cream, earth tone, brown and dark brown colours)
- Earring backs
- Super glue
- Permanent marker
- Baking dish
Tips: Work on a clean surface as the clay will pick up any dust or dirt if it comes into contact with it.
When marbling the clay don’t overwork it; once you have merged the colours, work the clay into shape as soon as possible so that the colours have a clear marble definition and don’t start to blend.
To make:
Cow print earrings
1. Take a ball of a light coloured polymer clay, the beige or white work well for this and roll into a 1-2 inch ball.
2. Split the ball so you have two equal sized pieces and flatten out onto a surface. You can use a rolling pin for this but be careful as the polymer will grab onto the surface, I prefer to use my fingers to press out the clay into oval shapes.
3. Make sure your clay is around the same thickness for each of the elongated ovals and don’t worry too much about them looking perfect shapes as long as they are similar to one another.
4. Place on baking tray and bake for 30 mins on 110°c.
5. Once cooled you can use a permanent marker to work the cow print over the earrings, let them dry and superglue the backs in place.
Marble Oval Earrings
1. Take a 2.5 cm (1 inch) ball of cream clay and 2.5 cm (1 inch) ball of brown clay, roll them both out to create sausage shapes.
2. Twist them together by rolling one colour around the other.
3. Roll into a ball making sure the colours are merging and split back into 2 balls before pushing each of them into an oval shape. If you find it easier use a knife to cut your shapes out but I find it easier to do it by eye and use my fingers to push the polymer clay.
4. Place on baking tray and bake for 30 mins on 110°c.
5. Once cooled use the super glue to add the earring backs onto the clay.
Marble Hooped Earrings
1. Take a 2.5cm (1 inch) ball of cream and a 2.5cm (1 inch) ball of white clay, roll them both out to create sausage shapes.
2. Twist them together by rolling one colour around the other.
3. Roll into a ball making sure the colours are merging and split back into 2 balls before rolling them out to 2 sausage shapes, join them to make an elongated oval hoop.
4. Place on baking tray and bake for 30 mins on 110°c.
5. Once cooled use the super glue to add the earring backs onto the clay.
Dash Pattern Earrings
1. Take 2 x 20p size pieces of light colour polymer clay.
2. Push them out to oval shapes keeping the clay a bit thicker than the cow print ones. Smooth the edges with your finger.
3. Place on baking tray and bake for 30 mins on 110°c.
4. Once cooled you can use a permanent marker to work the dash pattern over the earrings, let them dry and superglue the backs in place.
