Felt Donate Bag Charm
You will need:
- Droplet template
- Square of red felt
- Scrap of white 14-count Aida
- Black stranded cotton embroidery thread
- Embroidery needle
- Red and white sewing thread
- Selection of small red buttons, sequins or beads
- For hanging loop, 30cm of fine red cord or narrow ribbon, folded in half with ends knotted together
- For padding, a scrap of bump/domette curtain interlining or similar lightweight batting
- For stiffener, a scrap of template plastic, pelmet stiffener or lightweight cardboard
- Sewing machine (optional)
To make:
- Print out the droplet template at 100% on A4 paper and cut out the largest size; use template to cut out two shapes from red felt.
- Stitch the words ‘DONATE’, ‘STEM’ and ‘CELLS’ on to a scrap of Aida. Space each word well apart and work the letters using backstitch and a single strand of six-stranded thread in the embroidery needle. Each letter is worked across four blocks of the Aida, and spaced one block apart, see our stitch guide for how to work the stitches.
- When each word is complete, carefully cut them out three blocks away from the edge of your stitching. Fray away one block of Aida around the edges of each word.
- Arrange the words on the top of one felt piece, as desired. Either machine stitch or hand-stitch them in place around the edges. Decorate the rest of the felt droplet with buttons, sequins or beads, making sure you keep them all at least 6mm from the edge of the felt.
- Using the template cut a piece of padding and a piece of stiffener. Trim the padding piece down so that it is 5mm smaller all round than the felt pieces and trim the stiffener to be 1cm smaller all around.
- Pin the two felt pieces together around the edges, sandwiching the padding and stiffener inside. Either machine or hand stitch the pieces together working close to the felt edges and making sure you keep the stiffener well out of the way of the needle. As you get to the pointed top, insert the knotted end of the hanging loop and sew in place as you work your way around. Reinforce the stitching at the loop, by sewing over twice.
