Embroidered felt needlecase
Skill level: Beginner
You will need:
- 3 pieces of wool mix felt (18 x 10cm) in different colours
- Stranded embroidery cotton in various colours
- 1 embroidery needle
- A pair of scissors
- Pattern template
- Stitch guide
Tip: Please note that all embroidery should be done with only 1 or 2 strands of thread. Simply cut a length of stranded cotton (about 60cm) and pull out 1 or 2 strands from the end.
To make:
1. Print and cut out the templates.
2. Cut 3 rectangles of felt, 1 in each colour. Decide which colour will be the outer one (green in the image) and cut 3 decorative circles in the remaining two colours (pink and cream).
3. Take the piece of felt you have chosen as the outer piece (the green one in the image) and fold it in half to find the centre. Mark the crease by pressing with your finger or ironing on a very cool setting.
Place the 3 circles on what will be the front of your needle case, with the fold on the left.
4. Embroider the flowers on the front following the stitches listed in the guide. Start with the circles and then embroider the stalks. There is no need to sew the circles on the background first as the embroidery will hold them in place as long as you stitch through both layers of felt.
5. Cut a little strip of felt of 2.5 x 1cm to make a loop for holding your needle threader. Sew onto the piece of felt which will be the lining of the case (pink in the image) with a few small straight stitches. You could place this loop where you want.
6. Place the piece for the insert on top of the lining piece (cream on pink), on top of the needle threader loop.
Stitch along the middle with a backstitch. Think of a book and the centre binding line. This stitching will be hidden so do not worry too much about it.
7. Join the two sides of the cream insert hiding the stitching inside. Trim 0.5cm off the long edge.
Stitch all the way around with a blanket stitch.
8. Place the outer piece on your work surface, embroidered side down. Place the lining piece (with the insert) on top.
Pin around the edges and stitch together with a blanket stitch.
9. When you have finished, fold the case in half and place all your needles in the case.
