Finance Adviser (Voluntary)
The organisation: The National Federation of Women’s Institutes (NFWI), commonly known at ‘The WI’, the UK’s largest voluntary women’s organisation, with a membership in excess of 180,000 and a registered charity, is looking for a Finance Adviser to support the Finance Committee.
The NFWI Group is made up of NFWI (the national charity), the Denman Trust (a separate charity that exists to deliver educational opportunities to WI members), and WIE (our registered company).
The role: The Finance Committee Adviser contributes ideas and advice to support the committee in supervising the NFWI’s finances. This is one of two adviser roles.
The adviser should be sympathetic to the aims and ethos of the WI and should ideally have board-level business / financial experience in the not-for-profit or commercial sectors (preferably organisations at least of a similar size / turnover), an understanding of the charity sector and the issues faced by a membership organisation.
The Committee meets four times per year. These meetings are in most cases via Teams, although they can be in person.
Role Responsibilities:
Advisory and decision-making role:
- Actively participate in scheduled Committee meetings to provide expertise, advice, and guidance on key business decisions.
- Engage in constructive dialogue with trustees and senior staff team to ensure fair and transparent decision-making.
Governance and Accountability:
- Oversight of Performance: Monitor the performance and financial health of the organisation, ensuring it meets agreed targets and contributes positively to the charity's overall objectives and providing professional challenge as required.
Strategic Direction:
- Strategy Development and Review: Consider the longer-term strategic direction of the NFWI, ensuring it supports the charity’s mission while also being financially sustainable.
- Risk Management: Identify and evaluate potential risks and advise on effective risk management strategies.
Financial Oversight:
- Financial Scrutiny: Review annual budgets and monitoring management accounts for NFWI, Denman and WIE Ltd. Reviewing annual accounts and auditor’s report. Monitoring investments (held in common investment funds).
Confidentiality:
- Uphold the highest standards of confidentiality in handling sensitive information about the NFWI, Denman and WI Enterprises.
