Ann’s Recycled Rag Wreaths

Ann’s Recycled Rag Wreaths

Tutorial by Ann Williams, Overton on Dee WI, Shropshire Federation
Ann from Overton on Dee WI has created a simple tutorial for making your own beautiful recycled rag wreath.

You will need:

  • 17.5cm/8in Flat copper wire wreath ring
  • Thin cotton material in four complementary colours (these can be recycled from old shirts or t-shirts or other thin cotton fabrics available)
  • Decorative ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Washing pegs
  • Small decorations (optional)

Tips: Copper wreath rings are available online in many sizes or you could recycle an old (Christmas) wreath ring. Just remove the old foliage and give it a wash.

To make:

The copper ring used has 4 sections - you will need a minimum of 16 pieces of cotton material on the outer circle and 12 on the inner circle. The more pieces the better your wreath will look.

1. Cut the pieces of your material into 2.5cm/1in wide strips and then into 15cm/6in long pieces.

2. Take one 15cm/6in piece of material in each of the four colours, in the colour order of choice, and tie onto a section. Repeat until each section is complete.

3. Once all the sections are full; make sure that each piece of material has the knot facing in the same direction. The knots should be at the back of the wreath. To help keep them this way put washing pegs on the knots and leave overnight.

4. Tie on a decorative ribbon to hang your wreath. Optionally you can add small papercraft designs, pine cones, dried flowers or other decoration of choice.
